What is spring cleaning? Well, spring cleaning is a time to declutter and get rid of the dust and mold that has accumulated in our homes during the previous year. It’s also a time to put away winter clothes and décor, and set out spring and summer clothes, pillows, and rugs throughout our homes. The goal is to usher in a new year of fresh smells and a clean environment.

How is Spring Cleaning Different from Daily Cleaning?

Spring cleaning is different from weekly cleaning because we clean things we normally don’t clean every day. This is the time to clean the dust from your ceiling fans, wall moldings, windows and light fixtures. Anywhere there are cobwebs, dust and dirt in high places, this is the time to get rid of it. Get a Wet Vac vacuum cleaner to get into corners and places you can’t reach. Wash all the curtains and steam clean all the rugs and carpets in your home. Wipe away mold and mildew where ever you see it. Disinfect all of your door knobs and cabinet handles. Organize your closets and donate the clothes and things you no longer want or use. Vacuum all of your furniture and make repairs around the house as needed. Let’s not forget about cleaning pet beds and disinfecting children’s toys as well.

Tips to Get Started Cleaning

Although cleaning your home will make your environment healthier and improve your mood, it is very hard to get started. When we look at the area we want to declutter or clean, it may feel like a task that is extremely long and time consuming. The first step is to select a small area to work on. Time yourself 30 minutes to an hour and clean something small like clutter from a table. Declutter a bookshelf or tackle a small corner of a room. Once your time has ended, do not clean anything else even if you have not finished cleaning that area. The goal is to clean as much as you can within that allotted time. Take a break and decide whether you want to continue cleaning that day or clean the next day. I once cleaned a cluttered room for 1 hour every day and decluttered that room completely within 6 days.
